Abstract in brief

  • High-dose, short-duration valacyclovir therapy effectively reduces the duration and severity of cold sore outbreaks when taken at the first sign of symptoms, based on two randomized controlled studies.
  • The studies show that a 1-day regimen of valacyclovir not only shortens the duration of episodes but also increases the chances of preventing or blocking lesion development, with minimal side effects.
  • This research supports the use of a simple, safe, and convenient one-day oral treatment as an alternative to topical therapies for herpes labialis (cold sores).]
