Abstract in brief
- Since 1978, research has shown that exercise can cause free radical damage in tissues, especially in muscles, by producing reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. Intense or prolonged exercise increases oxidative damage to muscle proteins and lipids, but small amounts of reactive oxygen species are also necessary for normal muscle force. Excessive oxidative stress can disrupt muscle function, leading to weakness and fatigue, prompting ongoing studies to understand these processes and find ways to protect muscles from damage.
