Abstract in brief

  • This study reexamines the evolutionary relationships between cetaceans (whales, dolphins) and other mammals in the Artiodactyla group, emphasizing the importance of fossil placement for understanding how land mammals transitioned to aquatic life.
  • By analyzing both morphological (physical traits) and molecular data from numerous extinct and extant species, the research suggests that cetaceans are closely related to the genus Indohyus, and that the placement of key fossils significantly influences how we interpret their evolutionary history.
  • The findings indicate a complex evolution involving both herbivorous and carnivorous aquatic ancestors within the cetacean stem lineage and suggest that extinct relatives like Mesonychia and members of Cetancodonta shared specialized underwater hearing abilities despite some conflicting fossil and molecular signals.
