Abstract in brief

  • This study explored the use of milk thistle (MT) to treat liver toxicity in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), finding that MT was safe and showed a trend towards reducing liver enzyme levels, although no significant differences in liver function were observed after 28 and 56 days.
  • In laboratory tests, MT did not interfere with chemotherapy drugs like vincristine and asparaginase and even showed a modest synergistic effect with vincristine, suggesting it may enhance some treatment aspects without compromising chemotherapy efficacy.
  • Overall, while results indicate MT could help reduce liver toxicity in children undergoing leukemia treatment, further research is necessary to determine optimal dosing, treatment duration, and long-term impacts on leukemia outcomes.

@jonathanstea @DrLizaMD @PharmacistScott Milk thistle seems to have credible beneficial effects on liver function, whether healthy individuals benefit from it may be unproven but it’s not an irrational conclusion. https://t.co/2cfQxcOHHh

@clarewenham In the herbal world, milk thistle is used to protect the liver. I would get the advice of an herbalist regarding treating someone so young and discuss it with the doctors, but it has been tested in some children https://t.co/f6plFKFsrR
