Abstract in brief
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is when too many bacteria, primarily those usually found in the colon, are present in the small intestine, and it may play a role in causing Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
The study used a glucose breath test (GBT) to identify SIBO in IBS patients, with positive results indicating overgrowth if certain hydrogen or methane levels increased after drinking glucose; about 36% of the 98 patients tested had a positive GBT suggestive of SIBO.
The findings showed that older age and being female increased the likelihood of having SIBO, with hydrogen gas more common in diarrhea-predominant IBS and methane in constipation-predominant IBS; however, there was no link between SIBO and the type of IBS bowel pattern or use of certain medications.]
