Abstract in brief
This study compared the effects of plyometric (explosive movements) and dynamic weight training (weighted concentric exercises) on the energy cost of running in male endurance runners over 8 weeks, finding that plyometric training led to a greater reduction in energy cost.
Both experimental groups improved their vertical jump height, but only plyometric training resulted in a significant decrease in the energy cost of running, suggesting it is more effective for enhancing neuromuscular qualities relevant to running efficiency.
The findings highlight the importance of including explosive strength exercises like plyometrics in training routines to improve running efficiency, though further research is needed to understand the mechanisms behind these adaptations.
