Calorie Burn During Skiing: Realistic Estimates and Factors
How many calories do you burn skiing? While estimates suggest 300-600 kcal per hour, this varies with activity level. During skiing, most time is spent waiting or resting, reducing actual calorie expenditure to about 100-200 kcal per hour, especially for casual skiers.
Strength vs Cardio: Optimizing Long-term Health Benefits
Stuck on a desert island with one choice—iron or asphalt? This video explores the debate between cardio and strength training for real-world survival and long-term health. Discover how resistance exercise can enhance resting metabolic rate and improve overall fitness.
Understanding Energy Needs During Lactation and Physical Activities
This video explains the increased energy requirements for breastfeeding, highlighting that producing 750-800 ml of milk requires an additional 500 kcal daily. It also discusses the 2011 update of the Compendium of Physical Activities, improving measurement and comparison of energy expenditure.
Comparing Diet, Exercise, and Combined Treatments for Obesity and Fitness
This systematic review compares the effectiveness of diet alone, exercise alone, and combined diet with exercise in overweight and obese adults, highlighting that combining interventions yields better weight loss and fitness improvements. Resistance training is particularly effective.

@M_Stamatakis (Twitter)@SagarikaRamana @EricTopol @ESC_Journals @uk_biobank @Matthew_Ahmadi_ vigorous intensity is > 6 MET; MET= metabolic equivalent. 1 MET = an energy expenditure rate equivalent to sitting quietly. Roughly (and this is an imperfect standard) --> 1 MET = 1 kcal/kg/hour . See https://t.co/37KkND6JOs

Abstract Synopsis
- The Compendium of Physical Activities was updated in 2011 to improve comparability of self-reported physical activity (PA) data and provide a more comprehensive quantification of energy expenditure across various activities.
- This version retained the previous coding scheme while adding 217 new activity codes, including 561 activities with measured MET values, and modified existing codes for better definitions and accuracy.
- The Compendium is globally utilized for assessing energy expenditure in adults, aiding in research, surveillance, and formulating PA recommendations, and is evolving to become completely evidence-based.
