AI synopsis

What people are saying

The discussions reveal a fascination with the evolution of Crocodylia, especially with mentions like 'incrível' (incredible) and references to the gavial's unique features, complemented by suggestions to watch educational videos. The tone varies from admiration to critical reflection, demonstrating both interest and engagement within an academic and popular science context.

AgreementModerate agreement

Most discussions appear to support the scientific findings and appreciate the deeper look into crocodylian evolution, especially regarding the significance of the new research.

InterestHigh interest

Participants show high enthusiasm, frequently referencing specific aspects like the unique nature of the gavial, indicating strong engagement with the topic.

EngagementHigh engagement

Comments include references to videos, personal reactions, and calls to watch or share, reflecting active discussion and curiosity.

ImpactModerate impact

While the topics are engaging and informative, the overall practical or societal impact seems limited, as the focus is mainly on scientific curiosity and appreciation.

Abstract in brief

  • The study uses DNA data from 76 crocodylian samples to create a detailed evolutionary tree, challenging the idea that Crocodylus (true crocodiles) are ancient, slow-evolving species originating only in Africa.
  • The research shows that Crocodylus actually began in the tropical Indo-Pacific region during the Late Miocene, not Africa, and then quickly spread worldwide during a time of major crocodylian extinctions.
  • The findings suggest there’s more genetic diversity within the Crocodylus genus than current classification recognizes, implying the taxonomy may need revision.

@magneticksara Agreed, not a fan of the term, it gives the wrong idea about how evolution works. @PBS Eons did a good episode about this that I show to students whenever it comes up in a class: 'Living Fossils' Aren't Really a Thing https://t.co/3icpsa6qTb via @YouTube
