Abstract in brief
This study investigated whether abdominal breathing exercises can help manage gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) by strengthening the diaphragm's crura and improving the lower esophageal sphincter function, showing promising short-term (4-week) improvements in acid reflux control and quality of life.
Results indicated that patients performing active breathing exercises experienced a significant reduction in acid exposure and improvements in quality of life, while control patients showed no such benefits; long-term follow-up showed continued benefits in those who maintained the breathing exercises.
The findings suggest that diaphragmatic breathing exercises could be an effective, non-invasive complementary therapy for GERD management, especially for patients without large hiatal hernias or prior surgeries, with sustained benefits observed over 9 months.
