ImpactModerate impact
While the discussions emphasize the interesting findings about aquatic behaviors, the overall impact on broader science or society seems moderate, primarily raising awareness.
Abstract in brief
The study documents swimming and diving behavior in two captive apes, a chimpanzee and an orangutan, showing that they can swim 26 meters and repeatedly submerge, which challenges the idea that apes cannot swim.
Apes demonstrate deliberate swimming movements different from the typical doggy paddle seen in other primates, suggesting they can adapt their movements to overcome buoyancy despite poor innate swimming ability.
The researchers propose that early arboreal adaptations in apes led to reduced exposure to water and decreased natural selection for swimming skills, explaining their limited swimming ability and reliance on different movement patterns.]

@GMTminus7 Most mammals are pretty decent at swimming, at least for short distances. 'Cept us lol (but infants pick it up pretty quick). One other mammal can but likewise ain't great at it... Want to say giraffes and it's a physics thing? But bunnies are aight.
