What people are saying

The discussions demonstrate interest through references to the hybridization of coyotes with wolves and dogs, using words like 'thriving' and 'big genetic mix,' which highlight curiosity and recognition of the study's importance. Participants engage by recalling previous research and speculating on ecological impacts, reflecting a moderate but meaningful influence of the publication on their understanding of wildlife genetics.

AgreementModerate agreement

Most discussions recognize the hybrid nature and significance of the research on coyotes, with some referencing the hybrid's adaptability and genetic complexity.

InterestHigh interest

Participants show high interest, discussing hybridization, ecological impacts, and genetic findings, often using enthusiastic or curious language.

EngagementModerate engagement

Posts engage with the topic by referencing prior studies, genetic markers, and potential ecological consequences, indicating a moderate depth of discussion.

ImpactModerate impact

The conversations hint at a meaningful impact on understanding wildlife adaptation and hybridization, raising awareness of ecological changes caused by hybrid canids.

Abstract in brief

  • The study investigates hybridization between coyotes, wolves, and domestic dogs, revealing that eastern coyotes are highly genetically mixed, with all sampled individuals showing some level of admixture.
  • Hybridization appears to contribute to the adaptation and expansion of coyotes, potentially allowing them to better thrive in human-altered environments and areas with high deer density, possibly due to natural selection for wolf-like traits.
  • The research also finds evidence of sex-biased hybridization, likely involving male wolves and dogs mating with female coyotes, and demonstrates that a relatively small number of genetic markers can effectively measure the extent of hybridization in canids.]

@JarmonJesse Yes, that would be a cool study. In 2013 we looked for regional specialization in eastern coyotes but didn't find much, mostly a big genetic mix. Did find some wolfy genes in areas with lots of deer. https://t.co/SwX5ypsCPm
