Abstract Synopsis
- The study aimed to determine whether increased cardiovascular risk and mortality in diabetes patients was due to harmful effects of sulphonylureas or beneficial effects of metformin by comparing all-cause mortality in patients treated with either drug.
- Researchers analyzed data from the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink, comparing 78,241 patients on metformin, 12,222 on sulphonylureas, and 90,463 matched non-diabetic individuals over a total follow-up period of 503,384 years.
- Findings indicated that patients on metformin had better survival rates than matched non-diabetic controls, while those on sulphonylureas faced a significant reduction in survival compared to both metformin patients and non-diabetic individuals.
