The collection forms a discussion around the meta-analytic review on loneliness and mortality, with many posts paraphrasing key statistics (e.g., 26%, 29%, 32%) and citing Holt-Lunstad et al. Some reactions applaud the robustness of the evidence and call for attention to social isolation as a risk factor, while others express skepticism toward lockdowns, policy responses, or the credibility of the studies. The tone ranges from factual recaps to rhetorical questions, warnings, and calls to action. Word choices like “risk factor,” “mortality,” and “comparative to smoking” frame loneliness as a serious health issue, while others use sarcasm or challenge to emphasize delayed attention or political critique. Together, they illustrate a public discourse system-wide: acknowledging the science, debating policy trade-offs, and urging practical connections with others.

Abstract in brief
Social isolation and loneliness increase the risk of early mortality, with odds ratios indicating a 29% to 32% higher likelihood of death for those affected.
The study reviewed data from various sources between 1980 and 2014, finding consistent effects across different genders and regions, while health status at the start influences outcomes.
Results show that younger individuals (under 65) are more vulnerable to mortality risks from social isolation, comparable to other significant mortality risk factors.
20/ One 2015 study even found that social isolation increased the risk of mortality by between 26-32%. The lockdowns therefore are almost certainly a contributing factor to the surge in excess deaths that we are seeing.

As "only a nurse" even I knew social isolation would increase mortality. It only took me a few minutes to find studies that back this up. So how come "doctors and scientists" couldn't find them? Did they even look before suggesting lock downs etc?

Why pay attention to loneliness? Loneliness and social isolation as risk factors for mortality: a meta-analytic review Holt-Lunstad et. al., 2015 https://t.co/IiV2hJWCCB https://t.co/dfWmeW7vLX
Can tell you while we screen residents (and employees) at my nursing home daily for COVID, we screen residents for depression 1x / 3 months, and never screen for loneliness - even though we know loneliness *literally* kills (and that's aside from suicide): https://t.co/kfHeDOrRyY

Physical interventions are not the only way tech can help us live longer
Prolonged social isolation can be as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day
Connected tech can stop that with increased interaction

Don’t underestimate the power of people. #Loneliness has been associated with poor immunity, inflammation and heart disease. It may also increase risk of early death - seriously. https://t.co/r552dPrroH

@SkyNews Science clearly shows that isolation is not only inconvenient, but harmful.
Decisions about isolation time include trade-offs and value judgements.

@BioMickWatson @flwrs4algrnon 1/2 I think the figure is based on this meta-analysis which gives odds ratios for higher mortality of around 1.3 - https://t.co/tTPdEGx512. There are studies with all-cause mortality for light/moderate smokers with similar ORs e.g. https://t.co/LvDVYdBaAl...

Death from all causes
Another study (https://t.co/cRuV9vgk7r) shows that increase likelihood of mortality increases by 29% social isolation, 26% for loneliness and 32% for people living alone.
In other words, it’s not good/!
As "only a nurse" even I knew social isolation would increase mortality. It only took me a few minutes to find studies that back this up. So how come "doctors and scientists" couldn't find them? Did they even look before suggesting lock downs etc?

@AndrewJSauer @haiderwarraich @DrMarthaGulati @DBelardoMD @dranulala @robmentz @JonathanDavisHF @ShashankSinhaMD @gmac78 Based on this and other similar data, the CDC equates the risk of self reported social isolation among elderly (>65) to that of smoking 15 cigarettes per day!!

Having a #positive outlook and attitude may help you live longer, because happy people have more social connections. The risk of social isolation on risk for mortality is comparable with other well-established risk factors. So COVID is really hurting us. https://t.co/i9ikH6ders

@grizwald87 @cvangeyn Wrong. Thinking you can control the spread of a virus is the problem. Locking down hasn't and will never work, which is why prior to 2020 these policies never existed.

@andrew_leach @jkenney That’s where I struggle, when previous meta-analyses say social isolation is associated with 29% increased likelihood of mortality, I think deeper discussion, over sarcasm, is warranted.

@DFisman Any thoughts on dying unnecessarily from social isolation? I think that’s even more dumb and the susceptibility is much wider spread at any given time (entire populations are getting locked down but very few are truly susceptible to serious viral outcomes)
