MRI Findings of Disc Degeneration are More Prevalent in Adults with Low Back Pain than in Asymptomatic Controls: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Overall, the discussions exhibit a high level of interest, with many references to prior related studies like Brinjikji et al., and participants analyze how MRI findings correlate with symptoms. The tone varies from supportive to cautious, reflecting engagement with both methodology and clinical applications, which suggests the research has a meaningful but nuanced impact on clinical practice.
AgreementModerate agreement
Most discussions support the main findings, referencing prior research such as Brinjikji et al. 2015 and acknowledging the association between MRI findings and low back pain.
InterestHigh interest
The discussions indicate high interest, with many analyzing study details, referencing multiple studies, and debating clinical relevance.
EngagementModerate engagement
Participants show moderate engagement by referencing secondary studies, discussing implications, and noting the importance of contextual clinical reasoning.
ImpactModerate impact
The conversations highlight that the research influences clinical understanding, emphasizing the significance of MRI findings in diagnosis, but also recognize complexities and limitations.
Abstract in brief
MRI features of disc degeneration, such as disc bulges, degeneration, extrusion, protrusions, and Modic 1 changes, are more common in adults aged 50 or younger who experience low back pain compared to those without symptoms.
The study's meta-analysis of 14 research studies involving over 3,000 individuals showed that these degenerative findings have higher odds ratios in symptomatic people, indicating a stronger association with low back pain.
Some imaging findings, like Modic changes and disc protrusions, are significantly linked to low back pain, while others like central canal stenosis and high-intensity zones are not, suggesting that certain MRI features are more closely related to symptoms than others.]

@MRWPhysio Contextualising indeed is the key. Not the scan itself. This should always be based on good clinical reasoning. People always discuss this paper from Brinjikji but always seem to forget about his other paper released the same year

@FlippinPain https://t.co/ckPlQxQ6va
People always seem to miss or forget Brinjikji’s second paper released the same year.
In my opinion it’s about good clinical reasoning for choice of scan and contextualising the results in relation to this.
"These findings do not prove that disc and endplate related imaging and spondylosis are pain generators, they do suggest that...these findings could be explored as candidates for biomarkers of LBP"
