Effect of Dilute Apple Juice and Preferred Fluids vs Electrolyte Maintenance Solution on Treatment Failure Among Children With Mild Gastroenteritis: A Randomized Clinical Trial.
The discussions demonstrate strong interest and general agreement with the research, as users reference specific studies and clinical practices, such as the effectiveness of diluted apple juice, with tone and word choices emphasizing clinical relevance and potential practice changes. Examples include comments on how this trial supports the use of preferred fluids including apple juice, and debates about limitations, which reflect active engagement and potential influence on pediatric care guidelines.
AgreementModerate agreement
Most discussions acknowledge the study's findings supporting diluted apple juice as an effective alternative to electrolyte solutions, indicating general agreement.

The discussions suggest the study could influence guidelines or practices, but some debates about limitations prevent an extreme impact score.
Abstract in brief
The study compared dilute apple juice (preferred fluids) to electrolyte solutions for treating children with mild gastroenteritis to see if juice is just as effective in preventing treatment failure.
It was a randomized trial conducted in Toronto involving children aged 6 to 60 months, focusing on whether oral hydration with juice is not worse than electrolyte solutions.
The results aimed to determine if using just diluted apple juice could be a viable, non-inferior alternative to standard electrolyte solutions in managing dehydration, based on outcomes like rehydration success, hospitalizations, and symptom duration.]

@jmteakell I was for a long time a strong oral rehydration solution advocate in this scenarios, then jama came up with this: 10.1001/jama.2016.5352 these solutions taste horrible (though infants love them hehe), no need to make them all more miserable than they are at the time.
