What people are saying
The discussions reveal a consensus around the idea that high LDL cholesterol may actually be beneficial for longevity, with phrases such as 'high cholesterol is linked to longevity' and references to significant studies lending credibility to this view. Additionally, users express their intent to further explore the implications for treatment standards, portraying a tone of urgency and curiosity about reevaluating traditional beliefs about cholesterol and heart health.
Most discussions reflect a strong agreement with the study's findings that higher LDL cholesterol may not be harmful and can even be protective for the elderly.
Participants show significant interest in the topic, indicating its relevance to ongoing debates about cholesterol management in older adults.
While some discussions delve into the scientific details, others remain more surface-level, suggesting a moderate level of engagement overall.
Many participants perceive the study's findings as having a significant impact on how cholesterol is viewed in relation to aging and mortality.
Abstract in brief
- The study examined the relationship between low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and mortality in people aged 60 and older, finding that high LDL-C levels are often linked to lower all-cause mortality.
- Out of 30 cohorts involving over 68,000 elderly participants, 16 showed an inverse association between LDL-C and all-cause mortality, suggesting that higher LDL-C may not be harmful as previously thought.
- These findings challenge the traditional "cholesterol hypothesis," which claims that high LDL-C is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, prompting a reconsideration of treatment guidelines for lowering LDL-C in older adults.

@healthsentry @drscottyk If you are really interested, pay attention to this: https://t.co/9eUXvNgzvd https://t.co/CPlZpYs1HT https://t.co/0AFeLKzw2d I can add more, but this is enough to understand - you need to stay away from statins as much as possible.
@SBakerMD 6.Statins prevent heart attacks. https://t.co/CPlZpYs1HT

@bigfatsurprise Dear @PatsyDiabetes Not even you would survive without a high LDL as LDL is essential for microbe fighting and a long life. Remember a researcher tries to prove a hypothesis while a scientist tries to falsify a hypothesis. We falsified the LDL cause CVD https://t.co/Vghsdgqxy4

@DoctorTro @realDaveFeldman Confirmation of our 2016 article Uffe Ravnskov, et al Lack of an association or an inverse association between low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol and mortality in the elderly: a systematic review BMJ Open Jun 2016, 6 (6) e010401; DOI: 10.1136/bmjopen-2015-010401
Use of the epithet ‘denier’ bespeaks a profound misunderstanding of what science is and what scientists do. Science is this: does that model fit this data? And nothing more. This article by Diamond has >350 citations: DOI 10.1136/bmjopen-2015-010401 https://t.co/9Ip9qmE2eB

@noCHObro @DaveKeto @FatEmperor Total cholesterol is a mix of HDL+LDL, so it's not an ideal measure. We have the only review paper I know of linking high LDL-C to longevity in the elderly: doi:10.1136/bmjopen-2015-010401

@Plantbiased @gerdosi @newyorker1213 2016 SR (19 studies, 30 cohorts, n=68094) on LDL-C and ACM in elderly is concordant doi:10.1136/bmjopen-2015-010401. Talking about LDL-C without context of metabolic health is pretty meaningless IMO. Even in the "best case" elevated LDL-C has 1.5HR, while MetS is 4-6.
