What people are saying
Several discussions highlight the findings of the research, pointing out that high dietary calcium is associated with lower risks of coronary artery calcification while supplements may increase this risk. For instance, one participant remarked, 'Calcium from supplements is associated with CAC progression,' illustrating concern over supplement use. Posts use phrases like 'damages your blood vessels' and 'high total calcium intake was associated with a decreased risk,' showcasing a tone of urgency and concern that enhances the perception of the article's implications on health.
The overall consensus from the discussions reflects a cautious support of the article’s findings, particularly regarding dietary calcium as beneficial compared to supplements.
Many participants express a keen interest in the implications of the study, debating its findings and sharing related content.
The depth of engagement is high, with users discussing methodologies, alternative studies, and long-term health implications of calcium intake.
There is a strong belief in the article's potential influence on public perception and dietary guidelines, especially regarding the risks of supplementation.
Abstract in brief
- The study investigates the link between dietary calcium intake and supplements and the risk of coronary artery calcification (CAC) in older adults over a 10-year period.
- Data from 5,448 participants were analyzed, showing that higher dietary calcium intake was generally associated with a lower risk of developing new CAC, particularly when not using supplements.
- Conversely, calcium supplement use was linked to an increased risk of incident CAC, suggesting that obtaining calcium primarily from dietary sources may be safer for cardiovascular health.

Ca is known to be protective against coronary atherosclerosis, but Ca supplementation is associated with increased risk of coronary artery calcification. Interestingly, no adverse side effects have been seen from consuming Ca from diet alone! #biom4180 https://t.co/lbaaAPM05d
@Alan_Watson_ @mattpt55 @superbirdman1 @MacroFour @PNayomie @richardursomd @MikeCarrato @erreyedoc @sarahboseley @FCRNetwork nobody should rely on supplements. There are no RCT that assure this is safe. Take calcium as example, in humans calcium supplement increases CVD (https://t.co/iY9y1xxQaP). Taking a nutrient out of context is really a bad idea.
