This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the short and long-term outcomes of treating varicocele in children and adolescents, comparing surgical or radiological interventions to observation, and found that treatment generally improves testicular volume and sperm concentration.
The study included 98 articles with a total of 16,130 patients and found that both open surgery and laparoscopy have similar success rates, while lymphatic-sparing surgery reduces the risk of hydrocele formation.
Despite evidence supporting the benefits of treatment, the data is limited by variability in study data and a lack of long-term outcome information like sperm parameters and paternity rates, and no clear superiority of any surgical technique was established.]
