Overall, discussions exhibit a strong consensus that high rates of adverse events in control groups are due to background rates and nocebo effects, as demonstrated by phrases like 'background rates matter' and 'it's why we use control groups.' The tone remains analytical and supportive, emphasizing the importance of proper trial design, which underscores the recognition of the research's impactful role in clinical practices.
AgreementStrong agreement
Most discussions agree with the study, emphasizing the importance of background rates and control groups to interpret adverse events, showing broad support.
InterestModerate interest
While there is some interest in the implications for clinical trial design, few participants delve deeply into methodological details, indicating moderate engagement.
EngagementModerate engagement
Participants reference the consistent finding that about half of placebo groups report adverse events, with some discussions citing specific statistics and background rates.
ImpactHigh impact
The widespread acknowledgment of the nocebo effect's influence on trial outcomes highlights the significance of these findings for medical research and public health communication.
Abstract in brief
This overview synthesizes evidence from 20 systematic reviews involving over 1,200 randomized trials to assess adverse events (AEs) reported by patients taking placebos in clinical trials, revealing that about 49.1% of patients in placebo groups experience AEs.
The study found that AEs are more frequently reported in placebo groups (65.1%) compared to untreated groups (42.5%), indicating that not all adverse events are due to natural disease progression, but may be influenced by nocebo effects.
Limitations include variability in review quality and a small number of trials with untreated groups, but overall, the findings highlight that AEs in placebo groups are common and contribute to our understanding of nocebo effects in clinical research.]
In a meta-analysis of adverse events reported in nocebo trials (they were given a placebo, but think they were getting treated), 50% reported an adverse event, of these, 5% withdrew from the trial.
This highlights the importance of a CONTROL group. https://t.co/lbsrhMKt8n https://t.co/QjZRdxBHSR

Events happen. It’s the reason we randomize (to make groups comparable) and use a control group (to estimate background risk). https://t.co/lbsrhMKt8n

There are background rates and temporality is necessary but not sufficient to infer causality. https://t.co/lbsrhMKt8n

@drjohnm ~50% of placebo recipients report an adverse event. About 5% quit the trial. It’s the reason we use a control group. There’s a background rate to every event except anaphylaxis. https://t.co/lbsrhMKt8n

@AgrkOne @DrMikeMendoza Adverse event are reported by 50% of participants receiving a placebo. Controls serve as estimates of background rates. Please cite the science literature. https://t.co/lbsrhMKt8n

@MsTrixter @RobertHartley77 @richykirsh @mcfunny @deralteGaukler @tenebra99 @hughriminton @10NewsFirst @NSWAmbulance Do they have a special code for placebo adverse events? The prevalence of adverse events in placebo groups is ~ 50%. It’s why we use control groups. https://t.co/lbsrhN23ZV

@BlueLionBlog @drjohnm Why do we use a control group? Because AEs occur with placebos too. Everything has a background rate. Control groups provide estimates of background risk.
The median prevalence of AEs in trial placebo groups was 49.1% (IQR 25.7–64.4%).

50% of placebo treated patients in trials report an adverse event; 5% drop out due to intervention 'intolerance'. Some of that is misattribution, some is genuine nocebo: https://t.co/GY4BYVx3Nn https://t.co/1jCTIqNrAt
