Abstract in brief

  • The study analyzed data from the National Health Interview Survey between 1997 and 2016, involving over 186,000 children aged 4 to 17, to examine trends in diagnosed ADHD among US youth.
  • The findings show that the overall prevalence of diagnosed ADHD was about 10.2% in 2015-2016, with boys being more likely to be diagnosed than girls, and notable differences across racial and ethnic groups, such as higher rates in non-Hispanic Black and White children compared to Hispanic children.
  • Over the 20-year span, the diagnosed ADHD rates increased, highlighting growing awareness and diagnosis, but disparities remain based on sex and race/ethnicity, which points to ongoing challenges in understanding and addressing ADHD across different populations.

@prettymadtree there are many reasons but here are two easily stated ones: 1. rates of diagnosis nearly doubled between 1997 and 2016. 2. they are highly concentrated in the US. these are strong indications of weak/flexible diagnostic criteria. doi:10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2018.1471

@defi_steve @GrantCardone My comment is based upon a research study in the @JAMANetworkOpen,“Twenty-Year Trends in Diagnosed Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Among US Children and Adolescents, 1997-2016”. You’re anecdotally offering an explanation why…but research shows an increased prevalence.
