Abstract in brief
- The study investigated whether patients with bronchiectasis and COPD can aerosolize Pseudomonas aeruginosa during coughing and if shared bacterial strains are present across these patients.
- Approximately 35% of participants released viable P. aeruginosa in cough aerosols, which could survive up to 4 meters from the source and for 15 minutes after coughing, but the bacterial counts were generally low.
- Genetic analysis showed no shared P. aeruginosa strains among patients, suggesting that aerosol transmission is unlikely to be a major route for spreading the bacteria in bronchiectasis and COPD cases.
