Abstract in brief
Postexercise hypotension (PEH) is a common phenomenon where blood pressure drops after exercise, and this study explores whether oral bacteria's nitrate-reducing activity influences PEH and skeletal muscle oxygenation.
The study found that in normal conditions, blood pressure decreased after exercise, accompanied by increased circulating nitrite and improved microvascular oxygenation; however, when participants used antibacterial mouthwash, these effects were diminished, indicating oral bacteria's role in generating nitrates that help regulate blood pressure and oxygen delivery.
The results suggest that the nitrate-reducing activity of oral bacteria contributes significantly to PEH and muscle oxygenation after exercise, and disrupting this activity with antibacterial mouthwash can impair these beneficial effects.
