The discussions highlight the surprising yet evidence-supported idea that men and women achieve similar relative gains from resistance training, exemplified by phrases like 'training results are similar' and 'muscle gains same,' which reveal an appreciation for scientific research and curiosity about implications. Users' tone varies from analytical to casual, reflecting both intellectual engagement and personal perspectives on gender and fitness.
AgreementModerate agreement
Most discussions agree that the research shows minimal differences in muscle gains between sexes, with some emphasis on the significance of the findings for resistance training practices.
InterestHigh interest
The posts demonstrate high curiosity about the topic, referencing specific studies and debates on gender differences in muscle development.
EngagementModerate engagement
Users engage actively by quoting studies, asking questions, and sharing personal insights, indicating a moderate level of thoughtful interaction.
ImpactModerate impact
There is recognition that the findings could influence training approaches and challenge stereotypes, suggesting a modest but meaningful impact.
Abstract in brief
The study found that both males and females have similar gains in muscle size (hypertrophy) and lower-body strength from resistance training, but females showed a larger increase in relative upper-body strength.
Specifically, the analysis showed no significant differences between sexes for hypertrophy and lower-body strength, but a moderate, statistically significant advantage for females in upper-body strength.
The researchers suggest that untrained females might have a higher capacity to improve upper-body strength, and they call for more research to understand why this difference only appears in the upper body and whether it is influenced by factors like neural adaptation or the short duration of existing studies.]
When analyzed, women gain the same relative amount of lean mass (and presumably muscle) and strength as men

This video explores three common myths about testosterone every man should understand. It reveals that muscle growth may depend more on androgen receptor content in muscles than on testosterone levels or boosters.

@Qyilldrisstessa @HillbillyFionn @Death2Misogyny It’s amazing you need a study to prove the obvious strength differences between men and women. But here’s one: Roberts, Nuckols, and Krieger (2020), titled “Sex Differences in Resistance Training: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.”
Roberts et al (2020) found that females had greater relative increases in upper body muscle mass while lower body mass progressed similarly to males. This does not indicate they develop muscle better, but likely that they were starting with less muscle mass.
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32218059/
A recent meta-analysis by Refalo et al found that there is virtually no relative difference in the muscle gain between sexes when placed on an identical training regimen. This is consistent with previous findings by Roberts et al (2020) and Jones et al (2021).
(pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32218059/)
@skdh There's a sex difference in ability to gain muscle from resistance exercise, but it's not that big (see for instance https://t.co/rlAR8t4J6L ), you might really just be doing it wrong, or genetically unlucky.
@wale_lol @meta_boli I think the term "benefit" here could definitely be defined more. Assuming it refers to gains in muscle size or strength, we know the relative benefits are overall similar for males and females.
