What people are saying

The social discussions reflect a positive reception of the research, with comments highlighting the low recurrence rates even when margins are unclear, exemplified by phrases like 'risk of recurrence is very low' and mentions of technical difficulties during ESD. The tone and choice of words indicate both clinical interest and cautious optimism about implementing the findings in practice.

AgreementModerate agreement

The posts generally support the findings, emphasizing the low recurrence risk despite technical challenges.

InterestHigh interest

Discussion shows high interest, with posts referencing specific techniques like ESD and cautious margins.

EngagementModerate engagement

Posts are somewhat engaged, referencing video footage and expert commentary, indicating active consideration.

ImpactModerate impact

Post discussions suggest the findings could influence clinical practice, though the focus remains on technical nuances.

Abstract in brief

  • When performing gastric endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), operators sometimes cut into the lesion from the cutting plane side, leading to positive or unclear vertical margins (VM1/VMX), which could increase the risk of cancer recurrence.
  • In a study of 1492 early-stage gastric cancers treated with ESD, only 28 cases (about 1.9%) had VM1/VMX, and none of these experienced cancer recurrence over an average follow-up of 41 months.
  • The findings suggest that even when the vertical margin is positive or unclear due to technical challenges during ESD, the risk of cancer coming back is very low, so patients might not need additional surgery and can instead be monitored with regular endoscopy.]
