Abstract in brief

This systematic review and meta-analysis examined how mental health issues differ between women in polygamous and monogamous marriages, finding that women in polygamous marriages tend to experience worse psychological symptoms.
The research analyzed data from 13 studies with over 3,000 participants and showed significant differences in mental health measures like somatization, depression, anxiety, and hostility, all favoring women in monogamous marriages in terms of better mental health.
Despite the poorer mental health outcomes for women in polygamous marriages, there was no significant difference in marriage satisfaction, but women in polygamous marriages reported higher self-esteem and life satisfaction, and women in monogamous marriages had better family functioning.]
