Abstract in brief
This study investigated how the thickness of deep trunk muscles like the transversus abdominis (TA), multifidus (MM), and psoas major (PM) relates to 100m sprint performance in male college sprinters, finding that thicker TA and MM muscles are associated with faster sprint times up to certain points.
Results showed that the TA muscle had a moderate negative correlation with sprint time, meaning thicker TA muscles were linked to better performance, while the relationship for MM was weaker and not statistically significant, and PM showed no clear correlation.
Using advanced analysis, researchers identified "changepoints" in muscle thickness—specific thresholds beyond which increasing muscle size no longer improved sprint times, highlighting that muscle development benefits performance only to a certain point.

Sprint performance for 100-m was found to be associated with TA and MM thickness in a biphasic manner. As muscle thickness increased, the sprint time decreased, followed by a plateau phase."

Having squatted big weight, done plyos & train AFL 20yrs but then in rehab looked at TA & Multifidus had to concede there seemed a link. Time & time again I saw players with injuries have crap ability to use TA & poor dvt multifidus. Stuffed if I know Ha. https://t.co/KFuWd3noRW

Why Glute Max? Propulsion? Pelvic conbtrol? All of the above?
Also a similar paper here, slightly slower group and a little under powered IMO but transverse abs = sig correlation with 100m sprint (-.691), but no correlation between sprint and psoas size
