The discussions suggest that this research could influence how paleontologists understand dinosaur movement and biomechanics, though some mention media sensationalism which slightly tempers perceived impact.
Abstract in brief
- The study introduces the Natural Frequency Method, a new approach to estimate the preferred walking speed of bipedal dinosaurs by analyzing the natural frequency of their tails, which were passively involved in locomotion through elastic energy storage.
- Using 3D models and biomechanical analysis, researchers found the tail's natural frequency to be around 0.66 seconds, corresponding to a walking speed of approximately 1.28 meters per second, suggesting this as the dinosaur's likely preferred speed.
- The findings indicate that these estimated speeds are lower than previous estimates for large theropods but align with the preferred walking speeds observed in modern animals, and the method remains robust despite certain uncertainties, offering an independent way to study dinosaur movement.]

@ArrayManta We usually simplifiy the torso-neck-head into a single body for these simulations, and it still results in realistic forces and football patterns. However, tail movement may be important for dinos, so it's on the agenda. (See: https://t.co/pqlWU9nFJN and https://t.co/k7DtXQK7aM)

@shadowcrow04 @Emily_Art You can measure Trix's skeleton in fig. 1 of my paper (https://t.co/QG58aFOAAN). I reported it explicitly as 11.7 m, but it's hidden away in the supplementary texts. Since then, I've done a full rearticulation (that paper focused on the tail), Trix is about 11m.
