Abstract in brief
The consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and beverages (UPBs) is linked to increased health risks, and while consumption has stagnated in high-income countries, it is rapidly growing in middle-income countries (MICs), driven by the expanding influence of transnational food corporations, or Big Food.
The study uses a political economy approach, combining data analysis and case studies (such as South Africa, Colombia, and Indonesia) to show how Big Food's strategies—like expanding manufacturing, marketing, and distribution—are fueling the rise of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in MICs, and suggests public health responses should focus on building global networks to counteract Big Food's influence.
Overall, projections indicate that by 2024, the UPF sales in MICs will match those in high-income countries, with MICs already experiencing higher UPB sales and faster growth, highlighting the urgent need for strategic campaigns to curb Big Food's expanding market power and promote healthier choices.]
