Throughout the discussions, the tone reflects recognition of the study’s importance, with references to invasive testing methods and microcirculatory dysfunction, such as mentions of oxygen extraction issues and microclots, which illustrate a scientific and motivated engagement to understand long COVID’s physiological basis and its broader implications for patient care.
AgreementModerate agreement
Most discussions acknowledge the significance of the study and its findings on long COVID and exertional intolerance.
InterestHigh interest
The subject of post-COVID exercise impairment captures high interest, especially with references to prior research and similar conditions like ME/CFS.
EngagementHigh engagement
Many participants delve into the methods, implications, and related research, showing deep engagement with the topic.
ImpactHigh impact
The recurring emphasis on biological evidence and potential for improving understanding or treatment indicates high perceived impact.
Abstract in brief
The study found that some patients recovering from COVID-19 experience persistent exercise intolerance despite having no evident cardiopulmonary disease, with their reduced exercise capacity linked to impaired oxygen extraction rather than heart function.
These patients showed reduced peak oxygen consumption and signs of ventilatory inefficiency during exercise testing, which could explain their ongoing exertional limitations even after mild COVID-19 cases.
The findings suggest that post-COVID long-haul symptoms might be due to peripheral factors affecting oxygen utilization and ventilatory response, highlighting the need for further research into targeted interventions for recovery.]
PEM/PESE is also found in people with Long Covid, likely because up to 50% of those with Long Covid now have ME/CFS. The same problems with oxygen extraction & metabolic dysfunction exist in those with PEM from LC:
