What people are saying
The discussions reflect a consensus that MRI degenerative findings are not reliable predictors of back pain, exemplified by phrases such as 'your MRI is not your destiny' and comments highlighting how findings do not correlate with pain severity, with tones ranging from skeptical to reaffirming the clinical irrelevance of MRI changes in low back pain scenarios.
Most discussions agree that MRI findings are not strong predictors of current or future back pain, emphasizing the study’s conclusion that degenerative MRI changes have limited clinical relevance.
Participants show moderate interest, frequently referencing the study’s implications and commenting on how MRI findings often do not correlate with pain, indicating some curiosity about clinical relevance.
Engagement is modest; many comments briefly summarize or echo the findings, with some users questioning or discussing the significance, but few deep dives into methodologies or detailed implications.
The discussion underscores the study’s importance in shifting understanding, with comments like 'another nail in the coffin for cause and effect' and 'your MRI is not your destiny' highlighting its potential to influence clinical approaches.
Abstract in brief
- The study analyzed lumbar MRI findings in a large cohort (n=3369) to determine their association with current and future low back pain (LBP) over a six-year period.
- Findings indicated that while higher proportions of MRI degenerative changes were observed in older participants, most MRI findings did not significantly correlate with future LBP severity, regardless of baseline pain.
- Interestingly, having multiple MRI findings (five or more) was linked to slightly increased pain severity at baseline and a greater increase in pain over six years for those without initial pain, but not for those with existing pain.

@gera_dev30 @CorKinetic @adiemusfree @laurarathbone It’s an educated guess. They did a study on that and it’s true more than 85% of the time and the new changes are almost always changes that exist in painfree people like DDD so it might just be an epiphenomenon. I say “probably not”. https://t.co/7ziMuSZRRp
