What people are saying

Discussions reflect a positive view of the study's implications, with comments like 'both young and old men could handle more than 15 sets' and questions about ideal volume, showing curiosity and engagement. The tone and choice of words, such as 'scientists made assertions' and mention of 'muscle hypertrophy in 90-year-olds,' suggest a recognition of the study's potential to inform older adults' training approaches and its significance in the field.

AgreementModerate agreement

Most discussions acknowledge the study's findings and relate them to broader concepts of muscle gain and training volume, showing general support.

InterestHigh interest

The topic of optimizing training for older adults captures high interest, evidenced by questions about ideal volume and references to specific studies.

EngagementModerate engagement

Several comments elaborate on the implications, citing evidence and discussing training methods, indicating active participation.

ImpactModerate impact

The discussions highlight the relevance of the study for older individuals and fitness professionals, suggesting modest but meaningful influence on training practices.

Abstract in brief

  • The study explores how different amounts of weekly strength training sets affect muscle growth in older adults.
  • It suggests that increasing the number of weekly sets can enhance muscle mass response, but there might be a threshold beyond which additional sets don't provide extra benefits.
  • The findings support using a weekly sets-based approach to optimize strength training programs for older individuals aiming to increase muscle mass.]

Ppl of any age can gain muscle with correct nutrition, adequate training volume, etc. Studies hv shown even 90 yr olds see muscle hypertrophy frm strength training. https://t.co/MnQfwYTaBz https://t.co/WrbXEmhSY9 Gaining muscle doesn't always mean looking like an IFBB pro.

@GaintrustMikey Here's a long article, focused on older lifters (like me), but their findings showed that both young and old men could handle more than 15 sets per week per muscle group without negative results. They aren't sure what the upper set limit is for men. https://t.co/Vf77UT9giU

@matkewali @itsme_shree25 Difficult not impossible. With correct approach to nutrition & training it's possible. Hitting correct training volume here is the key. https://t.co/Y5mKrcySXp Studies hv shown even 90 yr olds get muscle hypertrophy as response to training. https://t.co/QKsmOGjRsd

This is one of the studies I was referring to, where scientists made assertions about set ranges for older male lifters. https://t.co/Vf77UT9giU

How much weekly training volume is ideal for older adults? How do you measure volume in the clinic? Do you consider the total number of sets per muscle group you are targeting? https://t.co/2OmkZdqDzX
