Many discussions emphasize that the Bangladesh study, which reports only a 0.06% reduction in COVID cases, demonstrates that masks are largely ineffective, using words like 'negligible,' 'sloppy,' and 'inconclusive' to underscore skepticism. The tone is often dismissive and critical, reflecting doubt about the study's relevance and impact, and examples include references to other studies with varying results, but the dominant sentiment is that the findings diminish the perceived importance of masking as a public health measure.
AgreementStrong disagreement
The majority of discussions highlight that the study found only minimal or statistically negligible benefits of masking, with several posts citing the 0.06% reduction in infections as evidence against mask efficacy.
InterestModerate interest
While many posts are dismissive and focus on criticizing the study’s conclusions, some show moderate interest by referencing specific data points, indicating a curious but skeptical attitude.
EngagementLow engagement
Most contributions are brief dismissals or critiques lacking deep analysis, and some posts question the methodology without engaging in detailed discussion.
ImpactLow impact
The overall tone suggests that users believe the study has little to no real-world impact or significance on public health policies, often implying that the findings are being misinterpreted or exaggerated.
Abstract in brief
A cluster-randomized trial in rural Bangladesh assessed the impact of community-level mask distribution and promotion on SARS-CoV-2 infections, involving 600 villages and over 342,000 adults from November 2020 to April 2021.
The study showed a significant increase in proper mask-wearing from 13.3% in control villages to 42.3% in intervention areas, indicating effective promotion strategies.
The intervention led to a reduction in symptomatic seroprevalence, particularly among adults over 60, demonstrating that distributing and promoting masks is a scalable and effective strategy to lower COVID-19 infections.

@startrek_fan_2 @JamieSale Im well aware of levels of evidence.. the weight of which favors masks. if you have a higher quality RCT than this one I'd love to see it

布マスク着用でも、入院予防効果はあると言う話。
しかも、この調査は、おそらく本来の地域コミュニティでの効果と比較して全体的に結果の数値が小さく出ているであろうという

@PlumRemson @DrMRFrancis @tarahaelle I typically use that high quality reference for masks and distancing, because there are ethical problems with randomizing standard of care. But if you require an RCT: https://t.co/SL7uRTR8f3

@michaelryan756 @westaustralian @MarkMcGowanMP The definitive reference is Abaluck et al, reporting a large, randomised controlled prospective study of mask wearing. They report a hazard ratio around 0.91 to 0.92, which implies very minimal benefit. Reference is https://t.co/Nzkzs327Y1.
@itselijahsalt @BenAybar (especially if people are just using cloth masks. the consensus appears to be now that a cloth mask is a little better than nothing, but not really that good compared to surgical or N95/KF94 etc)
