What people are saying

The overall tone reflects genuine curiosity and support, with posts emphasizing that loneliness is not just about social isolation in old age but influenced by broader factors across the lifespan, illustrated by examples like peaks among young adults and the elderly. Words such as 'supports,' 'explains,' and references to specific age groups convey a thoughtful consideration of the study's comprehensive approach.

Most discussions acknowledge and support the article's findings that loneliness varies across all ages, highlighting factors like health and social resources rather than age alone.

InterestHigh interest

Participants demonstrate strong interest, citing specific research results, such as peaks in loneliness among young adults, middle-aged, and the elderly, and referencing the authors and publication details.

EngagementModerate engagement

The engagement level is moderate, with some commenters elaborating on factors influencing loneliness and mentioning the broader implications, but few delve deeply into methodological critiques.

ImpactModerate impact

The discussions suggest the publication influences attitudes toward understanding loneliness as a complex, lifespan phenomenon, though immediate practical applications are not extensively debated.

Abstract in brief

  • The study found that loneliness varies in a complex, nonlinear way across different ages in the US, with certain factors like health, marital status, and social interactions influencing loneliness at all ages.
  • Universal predictors such as income, household size, health, and social activity levels affect loneliness regardless of age, and their impact remains consistent across the lifespan.
  • The hypothesis that people who don't fit age-specific social norms would feel lonelier was not supported; instead, the same factors influence loneliness across all age groups.]

There are many works out there on risk factors of loneliness, and it is 1) not simply about old age, and 2) not just about the absence of social connections or interactions. See for example https://t.co/1UsGiLOnVR There are things like access to resources and health conditions.
