Abstract in brief
- This study investigates how adults with high-functioning autism differ from neurotypical adults in understanding and distinguishing their own emotions from others’, using behavioral tasks and brain imaging.
- The research found that, although behavioral performance was similar between groups, autistic individuals showed decreased activation in specific brain areas (right temporoparietal junction and right supramarginal gyrus) involved in managing conflicting emotional states.
- The findings suggest that autistic individuals may process self-other emotional distinctions differently at a neurophysiological level, highlighting the importance of choosing appropriate control conditions when studying these social cognitive processes.]
