Abstract in brief
- The study validated the Brain Injury Guidelines (BIG) across nine trauma centers, showing that most patients categorized as BIG 1 or 2 did not require neurosurgical intervention, indicating these guidelines can effectively guide treatment decisions in traumatic brain injury (TBI) cases.
- Findings revealed that only BIG 3 patients needed neurosurgical intervention, and there were no postdischarge emergency visits or 30-day readmissions in BIG 1 and 2 groups, supporting the safety of using BIG to reduce unnecessary imaging and procedures.
- Overall, there was a very high agreement (99%) between initial BIG categorization and final assessments, demonstrating that the guidelines are reliable for clinical use across multiple hospitals.
