Abstract in brief
This study investigated how a 6-month school-based high-intensity interval training program (Burn 2 Learn) affects the metabolism in the hippocampus (a brain area important for memory) of older adolescents, using MRI scans.
Results showed that adolescents who participated in the exercise program had increased levels of NAA and Glx in the hippocampus, which are linked to better brain health, and these increases were associated with improvements in fitness and working memory.
The findings suggest that physical activity might help enhance hippocampal function in young people with lower fitness levels, but larger studies are needed to confirm these results.]
