Abstract in brief
- This systematic review and meta-analysis found that women who stopped anticoagulants after experiencing a venous thromboembolism (VTE) linked to combined oral contraceptive (COC) use have a low recurrence risk, which is even lower than the recurrence rate in women with unprovoked VTE.
- The analysis included 19 studies with a total of around 3,511 women and showed that the recurrence rate was approximately 1.22 per 100 person-years for COC-associated VTE, compared to about 3.89 per 100 person-years for unprovoked VTE.
- Overall, the study suggests that discontinuing anticoagulation in women with COC-related VTE carries a comparatively low risk of recurrence, highlighting differences in recurrence risk between COC-associated and unprovoked VTE cases.]
