The discussions recognize the potential for these findings to influence future screening practices, thereby indicating a noticeable impact in the field.

Abstract in brief

  • The study found that advanced serrated polyps (ASPs) were present in 59% of positive FIT colonoscopies, with higher detection rates in women and middle-aged groups.
  • Including ASPs in the screening results increased the positive predictive value (PPV) for colorectal cancer and advanced adenomas from 41% to 43.8%, meaning the screening was slightly more accurate when ASPs were considered.
  • Despite the increase, only about half of the ASPs were detected alongside more serious conditions (colorectal cancer or advanced adenomas), so including ASPs adds a small benefit to the effectiveness of FIT-based screening programs.]
