Abstract in brief

The largest bony fish from the Late Devonian period has been identified as a new species, H. udlezinye sp. nov., discovered at Waterloo Farm in South Africa, closely related to Hyneria lindae from Pennsylvania.
The fossil remains include important features such as the skull, jaw, gill cover, and shoulder girdle, though parts of the cranial endoskeleton are missing.
This find expands the geographic range of the Hyneria genus, suggesting it was widespread in Gondwana rather than limited to Euramerican locations, and indicates that certain giant fish lineages originated in Gondwana.
