Abstract in brief
- This study investigated the use of endoscopic screening to detect second primary tumors (SPTs) in the esophagus of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) in a Western country, aiming to catch tumors early and improve survival.
- Out of 202 patients who underwent 250 endoscopic screenings, 11 SPTs were detected in 10 patients, mostly at early stages and treated successfully with endoscopic resection, with no SPTs found through routine imaging prior to screening.
- The findings suggest that endoscopic screening can effectively identify early SPTs in HNSCC patients, particularly in high-risk individuals, and should be considered based on their risk profile and overall health status.
