Abstract Synopsis
- REDs, or Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport, is a syndrome that affects both male and female athletes due to low energy availability, which can harm their health and performance.
- Since the last consensus in 2018, over 170 new research studies have expanded our understanding of REDs, including its links to low carbohydrate availability and mental health issues, particularly among male athletes.
- The new guidelines provide updated models for understanding REDs, a clinical assessment tool for diagnosis, and strategies for prevention and treatment, aiming to improve practices for sports organizations and clinicians moving forward.
