Abstract in brief
- This study examines whether replacing sugar-sweetened drinks with noncaloric alternatives like diet sodas or water can lead to long-term weight loss, based on a review of multiple clinical trials.
- The meta-analysis found that such substitutions resulted in a small but significant long-term BMI reduction of approximately 0.31 kg/m², with some evidence of BMI drifting back toward baseline after interventions ended.
- Overall, replacing sugary drinks with noncaloric options can help reduce BMI over time, but the effects are modest and may diminish after stopping the intervention.
