Abstract in brief
Chanting is an ancient practice used across cultures for meditation, healing, and personal growth, but its physiological and psychological benefits are not well understood.
A study tested the effects of 12 minutes of group chanting the sound “om,” finding that both vocal and silent chanting reduced cortisol levels and self-reported anxiety, with vocal chanting showing a stronger effect.
Altruism scores increased after both types of chanting, but there was no indication that these altruistic feelings extended to individuals from different cultural backgrounds.
