Abstract in brief

  • The study created the first life tables for UK cats by analyzing data from 7936 cats in 2019, showing that the average life expectancy at birth is about 11.74 years, with females living longer than males and crossbred cats generally living longer than purebreds.
  • The probability of death increases with age, starting from about 3.4% in the first year, reaching up to 50% before age 9, and certain factors like being entire (not neutered), purebred, or having non-ideal body weight are linked to a shorter lifespan.
  • The findings help veterinarians and cat owners understand typical cat lifespans better, providing updated information on how breed, sex, and health traits affect longevity to support informed care and decision-making.]

Want to adopt a long-lived cat? A short-lived cat? See Table 6. It is a little known fact that Thomas Hobbes had Sphynx cats in mind when he described life as "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short." #Caturday https://t.co/i3UNnK7hzC https://t.co/8v8kWWCUAh
