Abstract in brief

The discovery of a new deepsnouted tyrannosaurid, Asiatyrannus xui, from the Upper Cretaceous of southeastern China, shows it was a smaller, not fully mature predator with a skull about 4.75 cm long, roughly half the size of the large tyrannosaur Qianzhousaurus.
Asiatyrannus and Qianzhousaurus lived in the same region during the Maastrichtian period and had distinct skull shapes and body sizes, indicating they probably used different feeding strategies and occupied different ecological niches.
The differences in skull proportions—such as a deeper snout, longer premaxilla, and inflated cornual process—highlight variations in morphology and growth stages that help scientists understand their evolution and ecological roles during the Late Cretaceous.
