Phrases like 'unprecedented continental drying' and mentions of factors like 'groundwater depletion' and 'intense drought' highlight a tone of concern and urgency, indicating that participants are not just aware of the problem but are also critically engaged with its context and broader implications.

AgreementModerate agreement

Many discussions reflect a general consensus on the alarming findings of the publication, with users expressing concern about the implications of the water storage decline.

InterestHigh interest

There is a high level of curiosity among participants, with several posts sharing information and linking to the article.

EngagementHigh engagement

The discussions often delve into technical aspects of the research, showcasing a deep understanding of the implications on global hydrology and climate change.

ImpactHigh impact

Participants widely recognize the significant impact of this decline on future environmental conditions, demonstrating a sense of urgency.

Abstract in brief

  • The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and its follow-on mission found a rapid decline in global terrestrial water storage (TWS) from May 2014 to March 2016, with no recovery by 2023.
  • A series of drought events on five continents, exacerbated by record-setting conditions in South America and possibly influenced by global warming, contributed to this decline.
  • Alongside the decrease in TWS, there has been an increase in sea level, but the changes in sea level measurements from different methods in 2015 are likely coincidental, with no direct relationship established.

New study led by Matt Rodell @thenasaearth.bsky.social & co-written with several colleagues from @issibern.ch water cycle workshop reveals an abrupt decline in terrestrial water storage on land since 2015, consistent with a long-term drying on continents. Article: link.springer.com/article/10.1...

The land is drying out according to @NASA satellites & other data as heavier, less frequent rainfall runs off rather than replenishing ground water & a thirstier atmosphere more effectively saps soil moisture. Blog: https://t.co/qj7WhtTFRo Paper: https://t.co/QHmwJfksyQ https://t.co/jHJFdl4DPV

Current hydrological situation In the Northern Hemisphere winter its not too important, but during spring it indicates where hot summer temperatures will happen and during summer where the soil-moisture temperature cascade is active: low soil moisture = less clouds = higher temperatures #climate
