Abstract in brief

The study explores a rare stone-throwing behavior in Western chimpanzees at trees, which is thought to function as a form of long-distance communication or male display, similar to drum sounds made on tree buttresses.
Using camera traps, researchers observed that in most cases, stones were picked up but not consistently piled, and this stone-assisted drumming occurred in different behavioral contexts, often paired with other communication signals like vocalizations, indicating it might have a distinct communicative purpose.
The findings suggest that stone-assisted drumming is a unique behavior with its own signaling function, potentially culturally transmitted among chimpanzee groups, differing from traditional hand and foot drumming in both motivation and use.]
