Abstract Synopsis

  • The article reviews how hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle, mainly estrogen and progesterone, might influence exercise performance, but finds that these fluctuations generally do not impact muscle strength, maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max), or other key performance factors.
  • Measuring hormone levels accurately is challenging due to individual differences and the pulsatile secretion of hormones, which can make it hard to determine their true effect on performance.
  • While most aspects of performance like VO2max and muscle function seem unaffected, some evidence suggests that prolonged exercise might cause increased cardiovascular strain during certain cycle phases, particularly the midluteal phase.]
