Abstract in brief
Hyponatremia, a dangerous drop in blood sodium levels, is a significant health issue among marathon runners, especially in the Boston Marathon, with 13% experiencing it and 0.6% having severe cases.
The study found that risk factors for hyponatremia include gaining too much weight during the race, running for over 4 hours, and having very low or high body mass index (BMI), while gender and the amount of fluids ingested were not directly linked.
Runners who gained substantial weight, took longer to complete the race, or had extreme BMI values are more likely to develop hyponatremia, highlighting the importance of proper hydration and managing race pace to prevent this condition.

13% of finishers tested at the 2002 Boston Marathon were suffering from hyponatremia, caused by overconsumption of fluids. #BobFacts https://t.co/Und4qSVaMa
@Sharat_Chander Not to mention the fact that excessive water drinking can lead to hyponatremia, a condition more common than people might think. In the Boston marathon up to 13% had it. More water is not always better. https://t.co/7bpAZUnu9D
@ravenscimaven Thanks for sharing this. I’m a little surprised, with rising temperatures, that hyponatremia hasn’t gotten more attention. The need for electrolytes is something that’s been impressed upon distance runners for years. See, e.g., https://t.co/5iB6HgQXXx

Hyponatremia among runners in the Boston Marathon https://t.co/THqKAXtBS9
(z.B. DOI: 10.1056/NEJMoa043901) Wenn Faktenbasiert dann richtig. Es wird 40ml/kg empfohlen.
