Abstract in brief
A 15-year-old girl survived rabies after developing symptoms a month post-bat bite, without receiving the rabies vaccine, by undergoing a treatment that induced coma to support her immune response.
Her treatment involved medications such as ketamine, midazolam, ribavirin, and amantadine, which caused some drug-related toxic effects like hemolysis, pancreatitis, acidosis, and liver toxicity, but her condition eventually improved.
Nearly five months later, she remained alert and communicative but still experienced neurological issues like choreoathetosis, speech problems, and unsteady gait, although recovery from initial paralysis and sensory issues was noted.
Not gonna lie; since Petal focuses on medical history, things can get pretty gnarly at times. But if you want a more positive video to ease yourself into her content, I recommend her video on the first survivor of symptomatic rabies.

@AGR02G Então, um tratamento de por em coma a pessoa e deixar ela se recuperar deu certo. E sim a raiva tem aumentado em casos e ninguém tá percebendo.

I’ve known about Jeanna Giese’s story for years but not to this level of detail. I watched this whole video from start to finish without a single pause. I can’t begin to express how fucked up it is that that one neurologist simply brushed off the bat bite.

Most animals don’t have rabies. However, a rabies infection causes the host to change their behavior to increase its survival. That’s why it’s concerning when an animal like a bat comes into your space. Normally, it would fear you but the virus makes it want to bite you!
I have low followers but will post this anyways. Rabies is serious, it is horrific, the window to treat it is very little and it's undetectable. You most likely will die a horrific death. If you survive you will not be the same.

From it, I learned that in 2004, people didn’t often know that bats can carry rabies, and the first World Rabies Day was Sep 28, 2007.
Was the Fun Run episode (Sep 27, 2007) of The Office a tie-in to World Rabies Day?!

@Dr_Dr_Mr_MD @PiottiP @Animalsheltrdoc @txdvm1 There’s this somewhat well known case report of a survival in the NEJM. Not a full neurological recovery but did survive.
https://t.co/fuJ2h77rsV
@TRyanGregory My info may be out of date - I remember reading this amazing case study https://t.co/Gxyna936DP
But the fact remains the survival rate is extremely low. I wouldn’t take that bet.
